Abstract

Due to the environmental crisis experienced at the global, regional and local scales, due to the intense exploitation of the environmental patrimony, it is relevant to detect changes in land use and vegetation cover, in order to identify the levels of environmental degradation over time. In this context, the Mapbiomas Brasil project arises that proposes innovative methodologies for the monitoring of time series of the use and coverage of the lands of the Brazilian biomes. From this perspective, the following question was raised: can the techniques and products of Mapbiomas be used as support in other projects aimed at the field of remote sensing? Thus, this work aimed to report the experiences of the application of a didactic workshop that dealt with the potential of the products and tools of the Mapbiomas Project in a group of the Postgraduate Program in Modeling in Earth and Environmental Sciences, State University of Feira de Santana. In order for the results to be achieved, activities were proposed to be developed by a graduate group of 15 students. The methodological procedures consisted of three stages: the diagnosis of previous knowledge, the application of the workshop and, finally, the evaluation of its results. With the survey of the previous knowledge, it was noticed that all the students had theoretical notions regarding the Remote Sensing. However, a small part, 18% presented difficulties in reporting the concept and importance of monitoring land use and land cover. About 54% of the interviewees have already worked with satellite images, using popularly known software in the field of Remote Sensing and Geotechnology. When asked about the Mapbiomas method, 54% of the students reported that they knew about the project, but few really knew their goals. When questioned about Google Earth Engine, 72% of respondents said they did not know the platform or never worked with it. The workshop was applied soon after, reporting the objectives, methodologies and applications of the Mapbiomas and Google Earth Engine products for the monitoring of land use and land cover at national, state and municipal levels in Brazil. Finally, the results were evaluated, the reports showed that all the students evaluated the workshop positively, and that 80% of the class identified potential in the tools and products for use in their research on Remote Sensing and its applications. There was also a need for a greater diffusion and teaching on these new tools in the academic environment, which can collaborate in research projects in the field of Remote Sensing and help to understand spatiotemporal dynamics.
